What is the thermal treatment of wood pallets?

Pest infestation is the primary reason for using thermal treatment on wood. This procedure involves applying a temperature of 56°C (132.8°F) at the core of the logs. The estimated time to achieve the desired objective is usually 30 minutes.

In this way, the risk of pest dispersion is minimized. Living organisms inhabit the wood, particularly insects, bacteria, and fungi. Eggs, spores, and small particles survive in the material when they leave their natural habitat. The heat reduces survivors and the risk of dispersion in the wood and transport products.

In addition to thermal treatment, there is methyl bromide treatment for wood. However, the use of this chemical is associated with environmental risks. Therefore, many prefer thermal treatment for wood pallets and packaging to minimize environmental hazards.

Why is it important for the safety and quality of your products?

Thermally treated wood pallets are an international requirement. Many import and export processes demand pest elimination in packaging materials because wood organisms pose a risk to transported products and visited ecosystems.

This risk is particularly problematic in transporting food such as fruits, vegetables, and meat products. If the wood is untreated, pests may infect the food. However, moisture in the wood is the main cause of microorganism proliferation. Thus, thermal treatment is the most efficient procedure.

How does thermal treatment ensure product safety?

In comparison, fumigation with methyl bromide and other chemicals is less efficient. While chemical applications eliminate living organisms, the wood retains moisture. Therefore, it is common for microorganisms to reproduce again during long journeys.

International standards for thermal treatment of wooden pallets

Since 2002, National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) have established the ISPM 15 standard. This regulation was introduced to control the introduction and spread of quarantine pests in international trade. Authorities identified bark-free wood used in packaging as a risk factor for dispersion.

Each country’s NPPO regulates the procedures for wooden pallets and packaging to prevent this issue. National authorities oversee material producers and the procedures they implement to prevent pest dispersion. International law allows for fumigation and thermal treatment of wood.

However, environmental concerns regarding the use of methyl bromide are addressed in ISPM 15, as the chemical depletes the ozone layer. On the other hand, thermal treatment yields good results. NPPOs value the treatment of packaging wood and provide a mark that validates the material for international transport.

Export regulations for thermally treated pallets

Producers of packaging materials must have the thermally treated wood validated by the national NPPO. If the authorities validate the procedures applied to the pallets, they receive a code and a mark.

Processed and endorsed material has unrestricted movement in international trade. The pallets cannot leave the country or be stationed in international ports without the mark. Therefore, choose a provider that complies with the regulations.
